RWG Indiana, PA Welcomes You

Do you feel helpless when you watch the evening news and see the plight of the immigrants at the border? Does your heart hurt when you read about the terrible conditions at the border? Do you want to help in any way, in some way, but don’t know how? Please read on!

We, the members of the Refugee Working Group of Indiana, Pennsylvania (RWG Indiana, PA) want to take this opportunity to invite you to join us! We are a non-partisan group of diverse individuals who share a common passion for refugees, immigrants and immigration issues. Our mission is to educate, advocate, assist and create safe spaces.

This year, we will tighten our focus on issues surrounding immigration and immigrants in need. We are excited to start the new year with plans for a fundraiser for the Syrian American Medical Society, acquire non-profit status to facilitate fund raising, and present one of our member’s true story about “The Long Road to Immigration in the United States” this spring. This fall we hope to sponsor a fundraiser for Casa San Jose’, a well-established social service agency in the Pittsburgh area who has helped immigrants for over 14 years.

During the past year we’ve helped a mother from Rwanda with a serious medical condition, assisted an international student who had been in a serious car accident, marched to voice our support of the immigrants at the border and held substantial educational fundraisers for two non-profit organizations helping immigrants in the U.S. and in war-torn Syria.

Will you join us in continuing to make a difference when and where we can? Annual membership dues are only $10 and you will be kept informed of what we’re doing and how you can participate.

Thanks for submitting!

RWG Indiana, PA: Refugee Working Group of Indiana, PA

OUR MISSON: To Educate, Advocate, Assist, and Create Safe Spaces

Our mission is to provide education about refugee resettlement, advocate for displaced populations, and create safe spaces in the Indiana, PA Community.

The Refugee Working Group Mission Includes:

Education: Providing information to the Indiana County and Indiana University of Pennsylvania communities about refugees coming to the United States and Pittsburgh metro area.

Advocating: Promoting protection, rights, and durable solutions for refugees and other populations who are displaced and at risk.

Creating Community: Building safe spaces, resettlement opportunities, and welcoming efforts in the Indiana area. The Refugee Working Group began in October 2015 with Jack Hanna and Poom Taylor. It has since grown to include nearly 20 IUP and Indiana community members working to do more for refugees and raise awareness of their situation. The other founding members are Faye Bradwick, Don Lancaster, Hilario Molina, Clara Roberts, Susan Dawkins, Amanda Poole, Rachel Sternfeld, Bonnie Adair, Beth Marshall, Barbara Hafer.

Our origin was closely linked to the Arab American Institute in DC. We do support many of their policies such as:

Anti-Arab and anti-Muslim bigotry challenges the diversity of American culture and society, proliferates misinformation and stereotypes, fosters hostility- in some cases violence, and stigmatizes an entire community. We understand today’s anti-Muslim bigotry as partly rooted in anti-Arab bigotry, which classifies individuals based on their national origin and political views. What began as xenophobia directed at individuals with origins in the Middle East morphed into anti-Islamic sentiment that targets an entire faith.

The Beginning:

The RWG's first two projects were a Six O'clock Series educational panel and a fundraiser for the Syrian American Medical Society Foundation, held in collaboration with the Cavalry Presbyterian Church.

We are always looking to collaborate and find creative ways to further our mission. Please message the page if you would like to be involved.
